What Patients Need to Know
Jaydev Varsani – Clinical Prescribing Pharmacist
From 1 September 2025, the cost of Mounjaro® (tirzepatide) is set to rise across the UK. This change has been made directly by the manufacturer, Eli Lilly, and it applies to every healthcare provider — whether you’re with a high street chain, an online service, or a local clinic like ours.
At Bramley Pharmacy in Ealing, we know this announcement will leave many patients concerned about their ongoing treatment. Below, we’ve answered some of the most common questions and explained how we’ll continue to support you on your weight loss journey.
Why is the price going up?
The reasons are complex, but in simple terms:
-
Global alignment – The UK launch price of Mounjaro was lower than most of Europe. Lilly has now raised UK prices to bring them into line.
-
International pressures – Drug companies are under pressure to rebalance global pricing, especially between Europe and the US.
-
High demand – Millions worldwide are now using GLP-1 medicines like Mounjaro and Wegovy. Demand has outpaced supply at times, which has influenced costs.
How big is the increase?
Every strength of Mounjaro will be affected. For patients on higher doses, the change represents a rise of well over 100% compared to previous levels. Lower doses are also increasing, though to a slightly lesser degree.
No provider in the UK can avoid these changes, as all pharmacies and clinics purchase through the same licensed wholesalers.
What does this mean for me as a patient?
If you’re already with us at Bramley Pharmacy:
-
You’ll continue to receive safe prescribing, regular face-to-face reviews, and ongoing side-effect support.
-
We’ll remain transparent about any changes in cost, and we’ll actively review our pricing to keep it fair.
-
You’ll have the option to discuss alternatives if affordability becomes a concern.
What about Wegovy – should I consider switching?
Both Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Wegovy (semaglutide) are weekly injection pens that help regulate appetite and reduce cravings. The difference is that Mounjaro acts on two hormones (GLP-1 and GIP), whereas Wegovy works on GLP-1 alone.
Mounjaro has shown slightly greater average weight loss in trials, but some patients tolerate Wegovy better. For many, the choice may come down to availability, side effects, and now, cost considerations.
If you do want to switch, we can guide you to an appropriate Wegovy dose that matches your current stage on Mounjaro — meaning you won’t have to restart from the beginning or take a break.
Can I transfer from another provider?
Yes. If you’re currently with another clinic or online provider, you can move your care to Bramley Pharmacy. We’ll simply need proof of your current prescription and dose. From there, we’ll continue your treatment seamlessly, with the added reassurance of face-to-face care.
Is it safe to shop around for cheaper options?
We strongly advise against using unregulated sources or overseas websites. These carry real risks of counterfeit or unsafe medicines. At Bramley Pharmacy, all prescriptions are dispensed from a UK-licensed pharmacy with full clinical oversight.
