The Importance of Staying Hydrated

Welcome to Bramley Pharmacy’s guide on the importance of staying hydrated. Proper hydration is essential for maintaining your overall health and well-being.

Why Hydration Matters

Staying hydrated is critical for various bodily functions, such as:

  • Temperature Regulation:Helps maintain a stable body temperature.
  • Digestive Support:Aids in breaking down food and absorbing nutrients.
  • Skin Health:Keeps skin looking healthy and hydrated.
  • Physical Performance:Enhances endurance and strength.

Daily Fluid Recommendations

Most individuals should aim to drink enough fluid daily to keep their urine a clear pale yellow. The Eatwell Guide recommends that people drink 6 to 8 glasses of fluid each day. Water, lower-fat milk, and sugar-free drinks, including tea and coffee, all contribute to your fluid intake.

Water is an excellent and economical way to stay hydrated, but other drinks can also help meet your fluid needs. Additionally, foods we eat contribute to our overall fluid intake. Inadequate fluid consumption can lead to dehydration.

You may need to drink more fluids if you are:

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding
  • In a hot environment
  • Physically active for extended periods
  • Unwell or recovering from illness

Recognising Signs of Dehydration

  • Dry mouth and throat
  • Dark yellow urine
  • Feeling dizzy or lightheaded
  • Fatigue and low energy levels
  • Dry skin

For severe symptoms like confusion, rapid heartbeat, or fainting, seek medical attention immediately.
