Eligibility for the Service
This service is available to individuals who meet the following criteria:
-
Women up to 49 years old for combined oral contraceptives (COCs).
-
Women up to 54 years old for progestogen-only pills (POPs).
-
If you’re under 16, we will ensure you’re competent to understand and consent to the treatment under the Fraser Guidelines.
-
If you have used oral contraception before, we can provide a continuation, ensuring it remains effective.
We cannot prescribe contraceptives if you are pregnant or if there are medical contraindications, such as high blood pressure or certain cardiovascular risks.
What We Can and Cannot Provide
What We Can Prescribe:
-
Combined Oral Contraceptive (COC): A pill that contains both oestrogen and progestogen.
-
Progestogen-Only Pill (POP): A pill that contains only progestogen, ideal for individuals who cannot take oestrogen.
What We Cannot Prescribe:
-
Contraceptive Patches or Injections: Currently, the NHS does not commission the provision of contraceptive patches or injections through pharmacies, so these options are not available under this service.
-
IUDs (Intrauterine Devices) or Implants: These require a different level of care and are typically provided through GP clinics or sexual health services.
We will ensure that you understand which methods are available, and we’ll discuss the most appropriate option based on your individual needs.
